Investigation
The Supercomputing Center of Galicia’s mission is to contribute to the advancement of Science and Technology, through the research and application of high-performance computing and communications, as well as other information technology resources, in collaboration with other institutions, to The benefit of the Company.
The user community of CESGA uses the resources and services of the Center to produce new knowledge that is reflected in the more than 200 publications that it has been reporting annually and that can be consulted in the annual scientific production reports that can be consulted in the section on publications.
Research at Cesga is focused on Computational Science with the objective of contributing significantly to the advancement of the following areas of interest:
Operational prediction systems in Earth Sciences
Since its creation Cesga supports MetetoGalicia. It also supports the European Copernicus marine prediction system, State Ports and the Madeira Ocean Observatory. Additionally, these systems are used by private companies such as Ingeniería del Atlántico or Hidromod that work for ports around the world. Projects associated with this line of work include: CMEMS, RAIA, COPERNICUS, …
Life support research systems
Since its creation Cesga supports researchers in molecular modeling. In the last decade, Cesga has been serving research groups and institutions that require platforms for treatment of exomes and complete genomes for both research and clinical in humans (FPGMX / SERGAS). Other research groups take advantage of these platforms for the genetic improvement of animal and plant species of economic interest (USC, UDC, UVIGO, CNB, INIA, …). More recently, Cesga has been exploring collaboration with BIOGA to bring these services to its companies.
Promotion of the application of High Performance Computing for R & D & I in SMEs
Cesga has been working to bring supercomputing technologies to SMEs for more than 15 years, making it one of the most active and recognized centers in Europe in this area. He has participated in most of the most relevant actions in this area, including the FORTISSIMO, FORTISSIMI 2 and SESAME Net projects at European level, Cloudpyme 1 and Cloudpyme 2 at the level of the Galicia-Northern Portugal region, or the RESxPYME initiative led by Cesga that seeks to bring the capabilities of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) to SMEs. Participation in these projects has allowed more than 50 experiments to use advanced computing in small and medium enterprises in our environment.
Critical systems for the management of distributed computing service platforms
Cesga has been integrated into the different computer service platforms for scientific use that were developed in Europe for more than 15 years. The common objective of these platforms is the development of new computing technologies and coordination mechanisms between the different infrastructures that allow us to face the increasing challenges of science. The projects linked to this line of work have allowed the development of technologies such as grid or cloud cmputing or the European network of supercomputers. Projects in this line are Europeans Crossgrid, EGEEI, EGEE II, EGEE III, EGI Inspire, EOSC-HUB, PRACE 4IP, PRACE 5IP and Ibergrid. One of the great achievements in this group of projects is the development and subsequent production of the necessary technologies to account for the use of resources by the different collaborative projects such as those operating at CERN.
Design and implementation of technological solutions for the improvement of teaching / learning
Since its inception Cesga has been working on countless projects online, among them Rede de Escolas na Nube. The result of the project, which was highly valued and awarded nationally and internationally (selected best e-content nationally and finalist UNESCO e-content awards worldwide), was transferred to the Xunta de Galicia in 2014 (Ministry of Education and AMTEGA) that since then offers this service. In 2017 it was extended as a solution to all CRAs in Galicia. The project led to a European project led by Cesga: Rural School Cloud in 6 countries: Denmark, Italy, Greece, Great Britain, Macedonia, Spain.
Also in this area, Cesga makes available to the educational community in Galicia the open platform AulaCesga that today is used by teachers of all educational levels.
Design and implementation of Spatial Data infrastructures for R + D + I
Since its creation, Cesga has been working with researchers from various areas to create information processing systems linked to the territory. In this line of work, through the FAROS and ISEAS projects, important advances have been made in matters related to the adaptation to the fishing sector to the new regulations regarding the disposal of discards (in collaboration with IIM-CSIC, IEO). Also in this line important advances in heritage have been developed, in collaboration with the USC, the University of Seville, or INICPIT-CSIC, working with archaeological findings in Galicia and in South America, through projects such as IDEPATRI or ESTRIMNIDES.
